RootedSparks Professional Studio

The skills that decide a career are the ones nobody teaches on purpose.

So we teach them on purpose. A durable-skills curriculum spanning a first job through the first year of a career, built on one method: Observe, Decode, Position.

High Schools | Colleges | Mentor Programs | Employers

Start Here

I'm Starting Out

College, internships, and your first ninety days on the job.

Showing Up is the workbook version of what most people learn by getting it wrong. Every skill ends with a mentor session, so it works whether you have someone to talk it through with or you're figuring it out alone. On Amazon, $29.99.

I Run a Program

Colleges, mentor programs, high schools and camps, workforce programs, and employers.

One framework your whole cohort practices together, so the head start doesn't depend on which manager someone happens to get.

01

THE GAP

Nobody taught this on purpose. That's the gap.

AI didn't lower the bar on human skill. It raised it.

The value of work moved from knowing the procedure to deciding well when the procedure breaks. That shift arrived faster than anyone rebuilt a curriculum for it, so the skills that now decide whether an early-career professional thrives are the ones nobody was ever taught to practice. That isn't a failure of effort. It's a gap in how people are prepared, and it is measurable.

Employers feel it first. Half of hiring managers say new graduates arrive unready for the work, and 60% have already let go someone they hired out of the class of 2024. The shortfall isn't technical skill. It's judgment, communication under pressure, and ownership: the durable skills formal education rarely teaches and the workplace assumes.

93%

of hiring leaders call durable skills essential or very important in who they hire. ³

56

%

of leaders say weak durable skills are why entry-level workers aren't ready. 42% of workers agree. ¹

#1

adaptability and self-efficacy are the leading determinants of whether employees feel they are thriving, not just performing.

30-country study **

85%

of employers plan to prioritize upskilling their workforce. *

02

THE METHOD

One method, practiced until it's reflex

Every guide, every lesson, every brief runs the same loop. Read the situation. Work out what it's asking. Act on it deliberately.

observe.png

Observe

Read the situation

decode.png

Decode

Work out what it’s asking.

position.png

Position

Act on it deliberately.

The loop is simple on purpose. Applied to the hundred situations a first year on the job actually serves up, it becomes judgment.

THE GUIDES

The Studio

The cheat sheet most professionals earn the hard way, taught on purpose and updated as the work gets harder.

Showing Up:
Building Trust, Presence, and Influence as You Start Your Career

College, internships, and your first ninety days.

Ten skills across three parts: how you show up, how you earn trust, and how you communicate so your work lands. Each skill is taught the same way: the distinction that matters, the play to run, a worked example, a build-it exercise, a self-check, and a mentor session. Additional resources in the back of the guide include a "use this when…" index keyed to real situations and a script bank for the conversations that are hard to start.

INSIDE THE SHOWING UP GUIDE

Ten skills, all taught the same shape. Here's one, straight from the guide.

SKILL 05 | SET CLEAR EXPECTATIONS

What are you promising, and what are you actually capable of delivering?

THE DISTINCTION

Realistic confidence sounds like, "Here is what I can do, and here is when I can do it well." People-pleasing says yes too fast. Sandbagging protects you so much that people stop trusting your estimates. The professional move is the honest middle.

THE PLAY · BUFFER MATH

Estimate honestly. Add 20% for what you don't yet see. Quote the buffered number. Finish early and you over-delivered; if life happens, you're still on time.

MOMENT. Your team lead asks for your section of the quarterly deck by Friday.

DEFAULT. "Yeah, Friday works." Then a stressed week and a late apology.

BETTER. "Friday's probably tight, Monday is safer. I'll aim for Friday either way." Then deliver Thursday.

In the guide, every skill continues into a build-it exercise, a self-check, and a mentor session.

Promise less than you think you can do. Deliver more than you promised.

SCRIPT BANK

"Heads up, timeline on the deck: I can get you a solid draft by Thursday, or a polished version by Monday. Which serves you better?"

12 copy-and-send scripts, grouped by the moment.

For Programs + Universities

One method. Three ways in.

The guides are available to anyone starting a career. The Studio licenses to the people who run early-career talent, and every license includes the guides, the full Studio Brief library as it grows, and a direct line to the founders.

i

Individuals

You don't need a program to get the head start. Showing Up is available today: the digital edition direct from the Studio, or print and Kindle on Amazon.

ii

Colleges and universities

Career services, mentor programs, and career-readiness coursework. A structured curriculum your office can anchor a program on, department-scoped or university-wide, built for the gap your employer partners keep naming: graduates who know the material but haven't practiced the judgment. For mentor programs, every mentor-mentee pair works from the same decision frame and session structure, so volunteer mentors spend their limited time mentoring instead of inventing material. The mentor guide is included.

iii

Enterprise learning and development

Intern cohorts, new-grad onboarding, and early-career development programs. One-on-one coaching builds these skills but is priced per person, so it never reaches the whole cohort. Off-the-shelf content libraries reach everyone but teach no decision frame. The Studio sits between: one framework your entire cohort practices together, at license pricing rather than per-seat coaching rates.

The Studio is opening with its first programs now, and the programs that start early shape what ships next: which briefs land first, what the mentor materials cover. The conversation starts with an email.

06

SPEAKING

PS-ACC-nib.png

Chris Lomax is available to speak on durable skills and the first year of work. Depending on what your program needs, a session can stand alone or be folded into a Studio license. The calendar is deliberately limited.

07

ABOUT

The skills that make a career are the ones nobody teaches on purpose.

Chris Lomax spent twenty years doing exactly what these guides teach: reading rooms, earning trust, and making judgment visible. The Professional Studio is where it gets written down, one volume at a time: name the real move, make it repeatable, and the rest follows.
